Learning how to communicate effectively on the radio is an essential part of learning to fly, yet it’s also the aspect that many students find most daunting about the PPL and LAPL syllabus. At MotorGlide, we’ll help you develop the confidence you need to make efficient radio calls and you can sit your RT practical and written exams with our friendly in-house CAA examiner.

RT licence preparation

Most of our students study for their RT licence in their own time to supplement what they learn in the air, but we also offer a day-long RT preparation course that you can take before the exam to help you become fluent in the precise language you’ll need to communicate on the radio in any scenario, from flying in your local area to transiting major airspace. We’ll teach you the standard formulas you’ll be expected to use in a variety of situations, taking you through aspects such as:

• Departure and arrival procedures with FISOs (Flight Information Service Officers) and Air
• Traffic Controllers
• En-route services
• Transiting civilian and military airspace
• Pan and mayday calls

When you feel ready, you’ll be able to take the written and practical exams here at MotorGlide in our comfortable clubhouse at Sandhill Farm Airfield. Not all flying clubs have the facility to offer RT courses, so we welcome students from all clubs and you can feel free to book your RT exam with us even if you’re studying your PPL or LAPL elsewhere.

With General Aviation traffic being squeezed by large clumps of airspace, a radio licence can open up this airspace to you.

£30 – Communications Ground Exam (you may have already completed this as part of your PPL)
